Lions to sign tight end Jesse James

When the signing of the free agent becomes official at 4 pm on Wednesday, James will leave quarterback Ben Roethlisberger behind for another veteran smuggler to Matthew Stafford.

James, 24, told the Tribune-Review the day after the end of the season that he wanted to return to the Steelers, but only after testing the free agency status to see if he could play for a promising team longer. With the Steelers, James shared snapshots with Vance McDonald, and management never considered him the team’s closest team.

  • While McDonald’s goal was 72 times in 2018.
  • James only had 39 assists.
  • He had 63 and 60 goals in the previous two seasons.
  • In rookie contract, James earned $ 1,907 million in base salary in 2018.

“I like to play as much as possible,” James said on December 31. “I thought I had a good year and I took advantage of my opportunities, that’s all you can do.”

Glassport and Penn State finished the 2018 season with 30 receptions, their lowest total in three seasons, but averaged 423 yards and 14.1 yards per shot. He started 36 of his 56 games in his career with a total of 120 receptions for 1,189 yards and nine touchdowns.

He is best remembered for a catch that has not been declared legal, the controversial and canceled landing against the New England Patriots at the end of the 2017 season.

Detroit came into play with a need for screaming in the post. The Lions had 45 receptions for 461 yards and four touchdowns last season. Luke Willson and Levin Toilolo became free agents.

“Being young, I still have a lot of football to play with,” said James. “I know if I could come back here, it would be optimal for me, I’m looking for the best situation.”
